How to Save on Office Supply Costs

How to Save on amtsstube Supply CostsHow to Save on bro Supply CostsBusiness everywhere are struggling and looking for new ways to cut costs. Here are some great ideas to help you cut down on your business overhead with discounts, coupons, and even some free stuff Reward Savings Cards If you shop at Staples, Office Depot, Office Max, or Best Buy sign up for their free reward savings cards. With each purchase, you earn points that can be redeemed for discounts and will also get coupons in the mail. Shop Online If you spend $75 or more, most online office supply chains offer free shipping. Check discontinued and online specials before heading to the store. Online stores typically offer deeper discounts than they do in their walk-in stores. If you order furniture from a walk-in office supply store, you will have to pay delivery charges. If you buy the same furniture online from the same store, it will be shipped to you for free. When you order online, Staples, Office Depot, and Office Max typically ship from local stores, and you can usually get supplies and furniture (in stock) delivered to your office or home in 1 to 2 business days, free. Discount Warehouse Stores Beware and Compare to Save Warehouse stores like Costco and Sams Club may sound like a great place to buy office supplies on the cheap, but you can usually find better deals at other stores and online. Look for special buys at warehouse stores for the best deals. Items that are stocked on a regular basis are usually notlage discounted enough to warrant buying 5 cases of paper clips. Costco only marks up prices no more than 15% but that price markup is on what the store paid if they did not get a great price, neither will you. You also need to pay an annual membership fee. Remember, just because something comes in a larger package does not mean it is cheaper. Stores are notorious for charging more per unit of weight in economy sized packages than they do for the smaller packages. Before y ou purchase any item in bulk, compare the bulk price to the smaller package prices. You may actually find it is cheaper per unit to buy 10 small packs of 10 pens than it is to buy 1 box of 100. Dollar Stores Most items in dollar stores are junk and so off-brand you cannot trust the products, but dollar stores also buy up products that have been discontinued, have packaging problems, or were not selling somewhere else. They purchase these products from name brand manufactures for pennies on the dollar, and these savings are passed along to you. Making a special trip to dollar stores may not be worth the time and gas, but if you pass by one when you are already out shopping for basic office supplies, you might want to stop in and check for discontinued name-brand supplies. Just be aya to stick with names you recognize - off-brand products in dollar stores are usually so substandard that they are not even worth one dollar Get Free Stuff From Freecycle The Freecycle Network is a g rassroots nonprofit organization with 4,674 local groups and 6,393,000 members around the world. Freecycle is a great place to get things for free, or to get rid of anything you no longer want or need. Membership is free. To join, just find a group in your area and subscribe to an email list. If there is no group in your area, you can start one with the help of Freecycle moderators. Although you are permitted to inquire if anyone has certain items, this is generally discouraged. Join a Freecycle list (for free) in your area and watch the list. People give away everything from shoes to computers to cars. Another way Freecycle saves you money - forget paying a salvage collector to pick up your unwanted stuff - advertise it free on Freecycle. Chances are pretty good someone will take it How to Get Free Paper Best Buy gives you a free ream of paper when you buy printer ink from them (you do not need a coupon). Sign up (free) for the Best Buy rewards card program and earn points and get coupons in the mail. Buy Supplies Without Paying Sales Tax Nonprofits that are tax-exempt do not have to pay sales tax for goods purchased for their businesses. Take a copy of your IRS determination letter anywhere you shop for office and business supplies. Your tax exemption applies to office supplies as well as business equipment and computers and any other goods that are used exclusively for your business.

6 Ways Keeping a Journal Can Help Your Career

6 Ways Keeping a Journal Can Help Your Career6 Ways Keeping a Journal Can Help Your CareerKeeping a journal is a great idea- and not just for aspiring novelists and 15-year-old girls. And Im not referring to the public online journals that many of us (myself included) keep- though theres value in those, too. Im talking about a private, intimate journal a daily record of your experiences and observations, particularly at work. This type of journal is an unexpectedly great way to help you work through issues, analyze where youre at in your job, and grow in your career. In fact, consider it the easiest (and cheapest) gestalt of professional development you can findSo, go pick out a new notebook or journal, and get started writing- for these six reasons and more.1. Log Good IdeasBrilliance doesnt always strike when its fruchtwein convenient. In fact, your next great workdistributionspolitik idea might occur before bed, as youre cooking dinner, or- as mine often do- when youre in the showe r (like I said, not convenient). But dont let those ideas fall by the wayside simply because you didnt think of them between 9 and 5. With a journal on hand, you can write thoughts down when they come to you and make a note to share them with your boss or team. You might also find that, when you jot down one idea, a few more come to you.2. Learn Your LessonsTheres little value in going through experiences, both good and bad, if you cant learn from them. So, whether you totally nailed a client meeting or totally stumbled through a presentation, dont forget to take note of the lesson. By writing down what youve been through, noting what worked and what didnt, and analyzing what might help you in the future, youll set yourself up for much greater professional success.3. List Good Advice From MentorsThere are undoubtedly people in your career, both inside and outside your office, who provide you with invaluable feedback and advice. And you know whats even more valuable than getting that advice? Remembering it when you need it most. So, when you get great guidance from a mentor, manager, or peer, write it down and use it as a resource when youre struggling or looking for a bit of inspiration. Its likely youll want to remember their words of wisdom for the rest of your career- and maybe even pass it on to your own mentee one day.4. Vent (in a Safe Space)Did you get a passive-aggressive, condescending, or downright hostile email today? Did a client yell at you for something that was out of your control? Theres no more perfect place to vent your workplace frustrations than in the privacy of your own journal. (In fact, sometimes thats the only place you should be venting your frustrations) I dont mean to say that you should keep all negative feelings and experiences bottled up inside, but getting some of the little, day-to-day stuff off your chest, privately, is often the most therapeutic and safe way to move past your dissatisfaction. In your journal, jot down the respon se you really wanted to send to that colleague or client. Read it a few more times if you want, then let it go.5. Collect ComplimentsIt may feel a little self-absorbed, but theres no better place to keep track of the compliments and praise youve received than in your personal journal. The value of this is twofold First, it allows you to quickly remember the great things people have said about you when you need to provide a testimonial of your work, and second, it also acts as a quick and easy morale boost on days that seem harder than others. If youre being praised at work, its likely because you did something right. Its okay to relish that6. Envision the FutureUse the work youre doing now to envision what you want to do (and can do) in the future. In The How of Happiness, researcher and professor of psychology Sonja Lyubomirsky says that spending 20 minutes each day writing a narrative description of your best possible future self can help cultivate optimism and an overall sense of happiness. This exercise, which involves considering your most important, deeply held goals and picturing that they will be achieved is a valuable workplace exercise as well.Instead of becoming stuck in your routine, think (and write) about opportunities you see for growth. Then use this narrative to help build a roadmap. Now that you know where you want to go, how can you get there?Weve all gotten good at sharing publicly- we post our thoughts on public forums, share them at lunch across from our favorite co-workers, and tweet them out to the world. But by sharing your career experiences and your thoughts in a private space, youre in a better position to analyze your profession, reflect upon your experiences and goals, and plan for next steps as you grow in your career. I hope youll start writing todayPhoto of writing courtesy of Shutterstock.

The remarkable truth about trust

The remarkable truth about trustThe remarkable truth about trustOften expectation fails. William ShakespeareTrust is the intersection of hope and fear we want the best but think the worst can happen. What comes first, to trust or to be trusted? Most of us are uncertain about who to trust. Its not always clear when trust is appropriate. Or how much risk we should take. But, mistrust is harmful we cannot enjoy life if we are suspicious.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraTrust is the glue that holds people together from chance encounters, work relationships, friendships or intimate ones. Its the foundation of menschlich connections. Trust gives us permission to act freely. As Abraham Lincoln said, You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.Trust is a risky game. But, approaching it with a transactional mentality wont increase yur odds. Focus on building relationships rather than on what others give you. You cant expect others to be trustworthy if you dont trust them first.Trusting people is the most logical thing to do.The price of empathyTrust facilitates our emotional connection with people it makes feel weare in sync.Oxytocin turns mothersinto moms. It strengthens mothers reactions to infant faces and gestures. Mutual trust within happy couples is reinforced by the presence of the same hormone. Loving, affectionate, and sexual exchanges between partners also release oxytocin. Our body is designed to trust others. However, our experiences binnenbinnenseed mistrust. Parents failure to deliver on their promises create insecurity in their children. Relationship infidelity can relive childhood experiences they make the aftermath even more painful.Sometimes mistrust can play a dominant role in our life. Past disappointment, lies or betrayal can cause this issue. Distrus t is a valid response, but it shouldnt drive our relationships. A total lack of mistrust could cause anxiety, fear, and low self-esteem by trying to protect ourselves, we create more harm. Why is it so difficult to overcome trust issues? We are biased. Our past experiences tint our perception we pre-judge people. As Joshua Coleman writes, surviving betrayalmakes us hypervigilant. While this reaction is evolutionarily intended to prevent to suffer again, it has a downside too. Hypervigilance can keep us isolated from others.Trust is the glue that holds relationships together, yet we are afraid to trust people. The remedy for this paradox is empathy to trust others we must see their vulnerability first.Understanding others doesnt mean condoning what they did to you. Forgiveness doesnt mean forgetting. Its not justifying or overlooking an event. Its choosing to let go of resentment you eliminate the suffering, not the wrongdoing.Forgiving is hard, but not forgiving hurts more, asI wrote he re. The person who hurt you might not deserve your pardon, but you deserve to be at peace. The pain that someone caused you is real and valid. Legitimate mistrust is a natural self-protective mechanism. It helps you avoid being hurt again. But, constant trust issues fear, doubt, and suspicion can quickly turn into self-sabotaging.Empathy is not as hard or costly as most people think.A studyrevealed that we dont want to make the mental effort to connect with others. By trying to protect ourselves from potential harm, we stay away from people. In the experiment, participants reviewed images from two sets of cards. For one deck, they had to describe the physical characteristics of the person. For the other, participants had to feel empathy for the person in the photo and also to guess their feelingsParticipants were told to choose freely between decks. Almost everyone picked the decks that didnt require feeling empathy, even for the photos of happy people. They consistently avoided conne cting emotionally with strangers. However, after people were told they were good at feeling empathy, their abilityto see othersdramatically increased. They started selecting more cards from the empathy deck. And they also reported that empathy required less mental effort than those who were told they werent empathetic.Mistrust builds transactional relationshipsWithout trust, theres no collaboration. As achange consultant, I spend a lot of time helping teams build or recover trust. The biggest challenge is that no one wants to give the initial step they expect others to show their trust first.Trust is personal. But, collective trust requires everyone to contribute to buildingpsychological safety. People must adopt a positive and generous mindset, rather than a transactional one. There are three types of relationships according to Aristotle two of them are shallow. The first one is functional. People are in it for mutual benefit. Its a zero-sum game relationship both parties want to bala nce their gains and losses. The second kind of relationship is driven by pleasure. Its built on the foundation of how others make us feel.Think of a work relationship, for example. You may enjoy the time you spend together or benefit from that interaction. But, if something changes, you easily move on.Those two types of relationship are transactional. The moment the other part stops giving us what we want, we feel betrayed. Or, if we think we are putting more into it than the other side, we feel disappointed. The third type of relationship cannot exist without trust. It is based on a mutual appreciation of the virtues each person brings to the table. Its the people and their qualities what defines this kind of relationship not the functional benefits. As H. L Menken said, It is mutual trust, even more than mutual interest that holds human associations together.Without empathy, its hard to build deep relationships. We must see and accept others for who they are. Their uniqueness makes our life more enjoyable. Relationships of virtue take more time to build than functional ones. They depend on developing mutual trust. When you respect and accept a person for who they are, you are willing to take risks. Rather than worry about being hurt, you are free to enjoy spending time with them. Trust is a two-way street. What you bring to a relationship iswhat you get.Trust requires time and purpose. Life is not a smooth journey. The ones you love will hurt you and youll hurt them too. When we accept our own betrayals and mistakes, we are more willing to forgive others. Its the price to pay for the good moments that bring magic to our lives.A mutual trust relationship succeeds by integrating both negative and positive experiences we adopt a yes, and approach.Trust is a virtueTrusting strangers can be the rational thing to do, according to Paul Faulkner co-editor of the bookThe Philosophy of Trust. We act on the basis of trust. Its central to our social lives. Trust drives coop eration by exercising both explicit promises and implicit commitments. We must continually cooperate with people we dont knowlife is not a war of all against all.Similarly to Aristotle, Faulkner explores the difference between seeing trust as transactional or as a virtue. The philosopher illustrates the trust problem with the trust game. In this experiment, there are two parties a trusting party or investor and a trusted party or trustee. The investor must trust that the trustee will return a part of the gains. If he does shares, both parties win.So, what prevents the trustee from keeping all the money? On the functional side, if the game repeats, the trustee will lose by keeping the money the investor wont give him more in the subsequent rounds. Acknowledging long-term benefits and risks builds mutual trust. However, theres a more remarkable truth about the nature of trust. When we dont know someone, reliance becomes more problematic. First, theres a chance they could betray us. Second , it might be a one-off interaction, so the long-term benefits dont matter. Third, we dont know the other persons motivation. These three conditions can make cooperation seem unreasonable.Surprisingly, the data shows a different picture people by and large trust one another when playing the trust game. The problem of trustarises when we see it only as ameans to an end. When we think that trusting someone depends on the other person if they are trusting or trustworthy. Or when we see trust as something transactional we value the good things that might come from trusting someone. However, trust is a virtue its aboutwho we are, not about others.Think of generosity as a proxy. Being generous is giving something without expecting anything in return. Generous people are optimistic. They dont play a zero-sum game doing good makes them feel happy. The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.? Ernest HemingwayValuing trust itself requires an optimistic attitude of goodwil l, as Faulkner explains. Trust is a virtue that starts within ourselves. Being suspicious makes others doubt us. When we take thefirst step, we can make our trust contagious. In having an attitude of trust, we think well of others. Our presumption of optimism encourages the other to act well too.Value trust in its own right.Have faith in peopleTrust is not an assessment of people but a virtue that expresses how we approach relationships. Having faith in people gives us a reason to rely on the people we trust to do the right thing.Trust is an attitude it inspires others to trust us too.I usually trust and trusted people. Did people betray me, lie to me or disappoint me? Sure. But, in many other cases, they didnt. If I hadnt trust people, I wouldnt have achieved half of what I did. I wouldnt have built any deep relationship either. One of the hardest things in life is realizing we cannot control others. People are autonomous just like you. That realization frees us from disappointment w e stop expecting and start accepting. In the end scene ofManhattan, Isaac Davis (Woody Allen) cant accept that Tracy is leaving. She is about to catch a tuch to Europe. Though Isaac always encouraged her to explore the world, now he is hesitant about Tracy havingthatexperience.Isaac worries that, in six months, she will be a completely different person.
